420 - that is, April 20th - is National Cannabis Day. The true origin story dates back to 1971, when a group of high school students dubbed "The Waldos" in San Rafael, California, gathered at 4:20PM each week to smoke and to search for a cannabis plant that had supposedly been left behind by a member of the U.S. Coast Guard.
While the Waldos never found their free bud, word of their ritual spread through the Grateful Dead fan community, where Bloom discovered a flyer telling their story. As he launched his discovery through High Times, eventually interviewing members of the Waldos, 420 became a globally-accepted part of cannabis culture. Today the holiday is honored with smoke-outs, major events like the National Cannabis Festival in Washington, DC, and lit parties everywhere that pay homage to the marijuana flower.
