Harrison Wise's Generational Tapestry Weedsday Playlist

For his Weedsday Playlist, Harrison Wise chose the tracks that reflect his everlasting vision of the world’s ever-changing view.

"Music is the universal language that transcends borders and connects people in ways words cannot,” he says. “My playlist is a reflection of the diverse tapestry of emotions, experiences and eras that have shaped me - a Gen X-era Puerto Rican Jew from Coney Island, Brooklyn. From the infectious beats of disco to the soul-stirring melodies of R&B, and the lyrical prowess of 90's Hip Hop, each song tells a story and carries with it a piece of my journey. It is a celebration of the power of music to unite, inspire, and move us generation after generation."

People Under The Stairs - "Acid Raindrops"

This song is a banger and great for cruising in the car with the windows down and sound systems on blast. When I was younger and stressing, I would often blaze, then hop in the car to drive aimlessly and clear my head, and the lyrics just encapsulate that feeling so perfectly: “When the stress burns my brain just like acid raindrops; Mary Jane is the only thing that makes the pain stop; I let the music take over my soul, body and mind; To kick back relax one time and you will find…”  So so good.

Cymande - "Dove"

Just read the comments on the video; every comment is exactly why I love this song, individually and collectively. It’s timeless, a classic. It's got a little bit of everything: soul, rhythm, funk, rock and roll, break beats (before Hip Hop)… It was ahead of its time and simultaneously a by-product of its era. Instant and timeless classic.

The Roots Featuring Jill Scott - "You Got Me"

J-I-L-L S-C-O-T-Teeeeeeee!!! Jilly from Philly representin’ lovely delivers that smoothed out melodic shit in spades on this track. She also wrote this hood-inspired love ballad that had us all saying: #RelationshipGoals. The live version of this song also gives me goosebumps and the feels every time I hear it…

Bill Withers - "Lovely Day"

This is one of the most beautiful love songs and it’s so timeless. And it always makes me think of my daughter Ava. It’s “our” song and it brings me joy every time I hear it. I instantly think of her and how no matter what is going on in my day, just one look at her or her picture, I know it’s gonna be okay.

Mos Def (Yasiin Bey) - "Close Edge"

I had to have Brooklyn represented here and Mos Def/Yasiin Bey is arguably one of the best MCs to come out of the BK. I also love how hard this track hits coupled with the raw bluntness of the lyrics. It’s also worth pointing out that Mos was doing the Car-Pool Karaoke thing on Chappelle’s Show long before James Corden was.
