Ali Coleman's Nightclub Nostalgia Weedsday Playlist
For his Weedsday Playlist, Ali chose nostalgic hits that reminded him of milestone memories: “Having been a DJ for 45 years, plus as a child being exposed to and continuing to immerse myself in all styles of exceptional music since the early 1970s, selecting only five songs was no easy task. However, I've decided to curate a list that resonates with the period when I first began frequenting nightclubs and enjoying the pleasure of smoking the herbals back in the late 1970s and early 1980s. These songs are a nostalgic trip down memory lane, evoking euphoric memories of dancing for 12 hours straight or spinning 8-hour DJ sets. Even [now], I couldn't resist taking a puff to commemorate those cherished memories!”
Phenomenal Handclap Band - "Judge Not (Ray Mang Disco Mix)"
One of my favorites of the 2000s, this track is an electrifying journey of pulsating beats and infectious handclaps, with contagious and uplifting lyrics that make it impossible not to move to the groove and immerse yourself in its disco-infused magic. It always takes the listeners on a euphoric dance-floor adventure.
Meco - "Star Wars"
This is one of my all-time favorite disco-infused instrumental masterpieces! It brilliantly captured the magic and excitement of the iconic Star Wars saga, transporting listeners to a galaxy far, far away. This innovative fusion of John Williams' original score with disco beats became a massive hit, making it one of the most memorable and beloved theme song adaptations of all time. It demonstrates the incredible ability of music to transcend genres and become a sensation, appealing to both Star Wars fans and disco lovers alike. With its infectious energy and stellar production, this track remains a testament to the timeless appeal of the Star Wars universe and the creative power of musical interpretation.
Eddy Grant - "Living On The Front Line"
A favorite 1980s track, this is a powerful reggae fused underground club anthem that speaks of resilience and courage in the face of adversity, blending captivating rhythms with poignant storytelling and social messaging. It’s a timeless classic that truly showcases Eddy Grant's distinctive vocals and masterful songwriting, leaving a lasting impact.
Machine - "Is It Love"
This beautiful disco track epitomizes the essence of the era, featuring an infectious groove and soulful vocals that enthrall the dance floor. With an irresistible melody and compelling lyrics, this track remains a timeless gem that continues to evoke nostalgic feelings and keeps the disco spirit alive.
Third World - "Dancing On The Floor (Hooked On Love)"
This is one of my all-time favorite reggae-infused dance anthems. It seamlessly blends the island rhythms with soulful vocals, creating an irresistible fusion of genres. The uplifting and positive vibes inspire listeners to hit the dance floor, losing themselves in the joy of music and spreading an atmosphere of celebration and togetherness. With catchy hooks and captivating instrumentation, this song has become a timeless classic that continues to unite music lovers across generations. Third World's masterful performance in this track showcases their artistic brilliance and cements their status as pioneers in the reggae and world music scene.
