German singer, songwriter, and composer Marc Grünhäuser is better known as Quicche. As he explains his work: “Quicche Electronic sounds emerge and disappear in the next moment, distorted vocal samples –  deliberately chopped up – blend into catchy melodies, and in the background, one can hear the deep pulse of a piano pedal.” In the artist’s deeply emotional, effect-laden music, it quickly becomes clear that production holds as much importance as songwriting itself, resulting in songs that always have a lot to reveal.

Musical Artist Quicche Releases Debut Album Frisia Via R&S Records

This spring, Quicche dropped his highly anticipated debut album Frisia on the legendary London-based tastemaker label R&S Records. The album blends tender vocals, subtle electronics, and bold indie-folk, marking a transformative moment in its creator’s career.

Retreating to a secluded house in Northern Germany for the project, Quicche spent a month in isolation, writing, recording, and producing the album with minimal outside contact and limited equipment. This self-imposed solitude allowed him to focus purely on creating music for himself, not for an audience. The result is a work that’s raw, emotional, and unfiltered, an unflinching exploration of personal turmoil and the weight of familial expectations.

The title track, “Frisia,” emerged during a period of profound self-doubt, when Quicche questioned his place in music. In the quiet isolation of East Frisia, he confronted feelings of grief, shame, and anger, which poured into the music, creating a cathartic yet deeply relatable experience. Describing the sound as a genre-blurring mix of folk, indie, ambient, electro, and R&B, he embraces its fluidity where "avant-garde meets pop,” a true masterpiece.

Aside from Frisia, Quicche’s recent single "Red Eyes" continues the momentum from previous releases like Cyan II, White Teeth, and TAGIOG, which first introduced him to global audiences. All have received widespread acclaim from fans, media, and streaming platforms worldwide.

What Is Quicche's Musical Sound?

Quicche states the following about his sound: “When the arrangements seem disorienting at times, it is the sentimental harmonies that continue to embrace you. The emotional spectrum ranges from drifting away on ambient mattresses, through pure folktronica melancholy, to liberating catharsis.”

Take the song "Mid 30s HB," which opens Frisia, for instance: it crackles and bubbles, rises and collapses, before ultimately breaking out with brutal power. The drums seem to echo into eternity, the guitars roar with a shoegaze-like intensity, and the vocoder can be felt deep under the skin, leaving you with a dropped jaw.

What Makes Quicche's Sound Unique?

It’s no surprise that even before Frisia’s release, R&S Records took notice of the project and signed Quicche. Ultimately, his music is remarkable because it demonstrates how humans and machines can complement each other and evoke sentimental feelings. Often, it sounds as if something is broken, and it is precisely this quality that makes everything feel so alive. Every crack makes the whole thing tangible, allowing light to shine through. You feel understood: things don't need to be perfect to have an impact. On the contrary, the imperfect is even more impactful. It's the same with music as it is with people. These songs understand that—and in turn, we feel understood by them.

Quicche's Artistic Influence Weedsday Playlist

For his Weedsday Playlist, Quicche shared tracks that have directly influenced his artistry. “Every single song in this playlist has shaped my perspective on songwriting, music production and music in general,” he says. “I hope they can give you what they gave me!”

Bon Iver - "22 (OVER SOON)"

This is where it all began – to be honest. I remember listening to the album 22, A Million for the first time: I was confused, disappointed and almost angry. But after I had to listen to it over and over again for whatever reason, it finally clicked and my perspective on music was never the same again. All the care taken in the selection of sounds, the inclusion of “supposed” disturbing noises, the poetry of the lyrics, all of this captivated and influenced me like nothing else.

Burial, Four Tet, And Thom Yorke - "Her Revolution"

What a collaboration – even before I heard the song, I was prepared to be blown away; and I was. For me, the song is all about textures: the vinyl crackling, which establishes its own abstract rhythm, the mantra-like sample repetitions; simply ethereal. Since I first heard the song, I've been working a lot with textures, noises, field recordings, etc. in my own music and I don't want to miss it.

Mitski - "Bug Like An Angel"

“As I got older, I learned I'm a drinker; sometimes a drink feels like family”; as I write this, I get goosebumps just from reading these lines. The brutal honesty of the lyrics, underlined by the music production and the supposedly much too loudly mixed choral repetition of the phrase ‘family’, triggers an incredible amount of emotions in me and has taught me to be honest in my lyrics as well and to use unconventional practices in mixing, as long as they support the emotions of the track - what a masterpiece!

Vegyn And Mk. Gee - "Debold Mk. Gee Remix v7"

This song combines my two most-listened-to artists of 2024, which is why I just couldn't leave it out. Since the release of “Two Star & the Dream Police”, Mk.Gee is the musician that all the artists in my circle of friends can agree on, which is why I almost feel boring recommending him. On the other hand, Vegyn is hardly known by anyone in Germany. I love complexity in music and I have the feeling that Vegyn manages to create complex electronic music without sinking into pretension. Furthermore, when I listen to his music, I often feel a nostalgic melancholy, which I also express in my music. I recently read a comment saying that Vegyn is the Aphex Twin of our time, and even if I don't want to compare the two, they sure trigger similar feelings in me.

Fred again... And Brian Eno - "C'mon"

To be honest, I never really got on that much with Fred again...'s music, but at some point a friend gave me the vinyl of “Secret Life” and said that I absolutely had to listen to it, which I did straight away not only because Brian Eno, who I've been a fan of for a long time, was involved. I'm a big fan of ambient music, but this whole album blew me away on a different level and I especially love the fact that many of the recordings were made with a mobile phone – a middle finger to all those who claim that good recordings are only possible with expensive equipment – eat this!
