Who Is Green Market Report Co-Founder Debra Borchardt?

Debra Borchardt is the co-founder and Executive Editor of the award-winning cannabis financial news website Green Market Report (GMR). GMR has been online for 7 years, which by cannabis measures is 14 years in the regular world. She was a Vice President at Wall Street firm Bear Stearns and moved to journalism after getting a Master's Degree from New York University in Business Reporting. Her first business journalism gig was with Jim Cramer at pioneering financial news site TheStreet, where she honed her writing skills. She has covered the cannabis industry for over 10 years.

Alongside her Wall Street career, Debra was also an actress and playwright. She produced and performed in numerous Off-Off-Broadway shows. She was a regular on the soap opera As The World Turns and her fun factoid is that she was an extra on Saturday Night Live three times. When not writing about cannabis or going to conferences, you can find her hiking, biking or skiing. Anything outdoors!

Debra Borchardt's "Uplifting High" Weedsday Playlist

For her Weedsday Playlist, Debra Borchardt chooses uplifting and eclectic tunes that complement the high of the plant. “I listen to music all day as I work, but it’s mostly bebop jazz so that the song words don’t interfere with the words I’m typing or reading,” she says. “But when I head out for fun or a run or in the winter to go skiing, I crank up the beats in order to get the good vibes going. My music tastes are all over the place. I like alternative music with 80’s New Wave as my guilty pleasure. I flip between that and 90’s grunge and throw in some old progressive rock. I like positive uplifting music and since this is a Weed Wednesday playlist I made sure that some of them reflect our cannabis culture.”

Jill Scott - "Golden"

I wanted to start this playlist with a song that radiates positivity and no one speaks truth to power like Ms. Jill Scott. This song always lifts me and pulls me up when I am down. Her voice is perfect and she is such an inspiration. So, live your life like it’s golden, and let’s get this playlist going.

Jamiroquai - "Space Cowboy"

I love how this song swings between sweetness and then goes into the funky bass of the cheeba cheeba. I work out and ski to Jamiroquai songs. They have these great beats and fun lyrics: “I got that cheeba, cheeba, kinda space cowboy vibe.”

The B-52's - "Party Out Of Bounds"

Kicking it up a notch with some B-52's. I love this band so much. I saw them in 1982, and again in 2023. It's just the best dance music ever. The lyrics are hilarious and I have listened to this song so many times over the decades and I never get tired of it. “Is it even a party if people behave nicely? Who's to blame when situations degenerate? Disgusting things you'd never anticipate?”

Jane's Addiction - "Been Caught Stealing"

What’s an outlaw playlist without a song about breaking the law? It’s hard not to hear this song and not bounce to the beat. You don’t need to have a great voice to sing along to this one.

Led Zeppelin - "Misty Mountain Hop"

This is a purely nostalgic pick. It was the first song we played as my friends and I headed out for senior skip day to go to the beach. Like a scene out of the movie Dazed and Confused, we popped in the cassette tape and made sure the first song would set the mood for our day of outlaw fun. Whenever I hear this song, I feel a party coming on.

*Editor's Note: Did you know? Klaus Apothicaire co-founder Warren Bobrow chose Led Zeppelin's "You Shook Me" for his Weedsday Playlist. Check it out here. The band's "Kashmir" and "The Song Remains The Same" are also mentioned in our list of "5 Best Bands To Listen To After Consuming THC."
