Wednesday night’s panel at sex-toy shop Babeland, Soho, was interesting and engaging. Organized by Mackenzie, Editor–in-Chief of the Brooklyn based porn quarterly Math Magazine, it featured an all-star lineup of panelists who answered the posed question:WTF is Feminist Porn?
Answers were diverse.
Stoya, long-time adult performer, pornographer and co-owner of porn site TRENCHCOATx, said that for her company feminist porn has a lot to do with process; how performers are paid (fairly) and how they are treated (well.)
She said TRENCHCOATx rejects a lot of the unethical practices of some larger porn hubs.Fine art, fashion photographer, Nikola Tamindzic of FUCKING NEW YORK, said for him feminism in porn is about intention, motivation and the reasons for doing something. I.e. is the project exploitative or is it for the art? For advice columnist and speaker Abiola Abrams, it’s about desire, how porn makes her feel whether or not she feels bad about herself for watching it.
Other topics included fair pay for workers, safer conditions on set and the ethics involved in paying for a quality product over something that’s free. With so much ‘free porn’ floating around, it’s hard for smaller, more curated companies like TRENCHCOATx to produce content for pay, even though they often provide better conditions for happier performers.
Pre-sales for Issue Two (the third issue) for Math Mag are available through their site, look out for their launch party June 16.Fucking New York can be bought here.
