Dustin Hoxworth's Journey In Creativity And Cannabis

After losing his father in 2015 to what he says “was the VA shoving Percocet down his throat,” and stepping up his physical activism in 2016 “to stop the stealing of sacred Indigenous lands at Standing Rock,” life shifted drastically. Up until that point, Dustin spent the better part of two decades trying to survive corporate America building programs for some of the largest companies in the world like Apple, Abercrombie and Fitch, CenturyLink, Lowes, Home Depot and more. A perfectly timed event back in 2018 allowed Dustin to step into the film industry in Atlanta, Georgia, and for nearly four years work on films like Godzilla vs Kong, The Banker, What Men Want, Last Looks, Queen America, and several others. Dustin credits that time for giving him the confidence to step into the legal side of the cannabis industry after operating in the legacy market for nearly 30 years.

Dustin has spent most of his adult life writing and recording music with three different bands, including his solo project, Pitchkettle. His latest musical work, Black Postman, was released in 2019 and since then he’s decided to take time off to focus his creativity by building a cultural phenomenon with the independent cannabis publication, Fat Nugs Magazine. It’s where the culmination of everything Dustin has ever been a part of, created, and accomplished comes together to give him the opportunity to uplift cannabis into its rightful place into society. He does that through authentic journalism, excellent interviews and storytelling, and badass art.

Fat Nugs Magazine is a dynamic independent publication that brings cannabis culture to life through story, art, comedy, parody, education, science, and contributions from some of the best international talents in the industry. Dustin and his team describe the mission as born from a deep love and respect for the arts and natural world: "This is a place where you’ll find true Cannabis-lovers who think, eat, smoke, sleep, and live Cannabis Culture. Our goal is to build bridges both within our community and with others who want to understand it."

Dustin Hoxworth's Essential Weedsday Playlist

For his Weedsday Playlist, Dustin Hoxworth gives readers a peek into his essence through song. “The playlist I came up with is at the heart of who I am and shows the spirit in which I operate daily, so I hope you enjoy it!”

Sonic Youth - "Teenage Riot"

This mind-blowing and masterful creation cannot simply be described as a “song.” It’s this legendary sound that some believe was the first real breakthrough of what most people call alternative rock. The energy, the angst, the independent thrust of intelligence are all wrapped into one with what I believe to be one of the greatest creations to ever come from any band in the world. Sonic Youth was also one of Kurt Cobain’s favorite bands of all time, and that in itself is good enough for me to add it to this playlist.

Soundgarden - "Searching With My Good Eye Closed"

“Searching With My Good Eye Closed” is one of the least known but most dynamic, tough, grimy, and true “grunge” tracks by Soundgarden. The song easily brings you back to the glory days of bands that broke the rules of conventional songwriting by opening up the song using a See ‘N Say, which is something that had never been thought of up until that point. These dudes changed music forever during the early 90s and I was fortunate enough to see [frontman] Chris Cornell two weeks before he took his own life… still hurts to this day.

Bob Marley And The Wailers - "Small Axe"

This is my second favorite song written by Bob Marley. “Small Axe” embodies the soul of what Bob and many of us have always felt, and it’s one of those songs that can connect us all and let us know we aren’t alone in our fight against evil and greed in the world.

Nirvana - "On A Plain"

A music list without Nirvana from someone who was in high school in the late 80s / early 90s should just never be a thing. Kurt Cobain helped to raise an entire generation (Gen X), and for those of us who grew up poor, in broken homes, overlooked, counted out, were outcasts, and didn’t fit in, Kurt was everything. Nevermind dropped when I was a junior in high school and the connection to it was immediate. The song “On A Plain” specifically brings back massive feelings of nostalgia and absolutely needed to be on my essential listening list to understand where many Gen Xers got their approach as anti-establishment, which in turn has translated into almost everything we do these days.

Beastie Boys - "So What'Cha Want"

Another Gen X essential, the Beastie Boys and the song “So What’Cha Want” was something that connected many of us to just having fun. Grown ups hated them, the establishment hated them, and most other musicians had no respect for them. That made me love them even more. I dreamt of being a Beastie Boy when I was young and along with Kurt Cobain, these three dudes propelled me towards making music of my own.
