Since its opening in June 2024, NY Elite Cannabis on Bell Boulevard in Bayside, NY, has quickly become a cornerstone of the community. As one of the first legal dispensaries in Queens, this establishment is making waves not just for its high-quality products, but for its deep roots in the local area and its commitment to bringing positive change.

A Full-Circle Moment for Carson Grant

Owner Carson Grant, a long-time Queens resident, is no stranger to the challenges and triumphs of the cannabis industry. Immigrating from Jamaica in 1987, Grant’s life took a significant turn in the early 2000s when he faced multiple arrests related to marijuana charges. Reflecting on these experiences, Grant sees opening NY Elite Cannabis as a profound full-circle moment.

“Having been targeted by the police during those years, opening a legal dispensary now feels like a way to turn the page,” Grant says. His journey from a criminalized past to a legitimate business owner symbolizes a broader story of redemption and resilience.

A Space for the Community

NY Elite Cannabis is located at 42-15 Bell Boulevard, occupying a spacious 9,500 square feet. It is one of the largest legal dispensaries to open in New York State in recent years. The dispensary boasts a modern, clean design aimed at providing a comfortable and welcoming atmosphere for all customers.

“I wanted something for grown people,” Grant explains. His vision was to create a space where customers could enjoy a premium cannabis experience in a setting that exudes professionalism and warmth. The dispensary offers a wide array of products, including marijuana flowers, edibles, vapes, and tinctures, all sourced from farms across New York. Each product meets the rigorous standards set by the New York State Office of Cannabis Management.

Overcoming Past Challenges

Grant’s journey to opening NY Elite Cannabis was not without its hurdles. After his last arrest in 2010, he dedicated himself to building a stable future for his family. “That was the injustice that was done to certain communities,” he recalls, highlighting the frequent police presence in Jamaica, Queens, during that time.

Determined to provide a better life for his daughters, Grant shifted focus to running a successful Amazon storefront selling collectible toys. His hard work paid off, and in 2022, an opportunity arose for him to return to the cannabis industry legally. The state’s program aimed at helping individuals affected by the War on Drugs provided a pathway for Grant. With his past drug arrests and proven business acumen, he qualified for a CUARD (Cannabis Use and Retail Dispensary) license from the NYS Office of Cannabis Management. By November 2022, his application was approved.

A Bustling Hub of Activity

Bayside has proven to be an ideal location for NY Elite Cannabis. The neighborhood’s vibrant mix of restaurants and nightlife generates a steady flow of foot traffic, which Grant views as a major advantage. “Bayside is a very bustling community. It’s the perfect location,” he says.

The dispensary has quickly garnered a diverse clientele, ranging in age from 21 to 78. Many of the morning regulars are in their 60s and 70s, showing a preference for edibles like gummies over smoking products. This range of customers underscores Grant’s commitment to catering to the varied needs of the community.

Education and Community Engagement

NY Elite Cannabis isn’t just about selling products; it’s also about educating the community. The dispensary features two classrooms where they will host educational seminars in partnership with Farmingdale State College. These seminars, starting in September, aim to inform the public about the differences between legal dispensaries and smoke shops and the importance of purchasing from licensed sources.

“We want people to understand why buying legal is crucial,” Grant emphasizes. By providing this educational component, NY Elite Cannabis is not only enhancing its community presence but also contributing to broader awareness and responsible cannabis consumption.

A Family Affair

The spirit of family is central to NY Elite Cannabis. Grant’s wife and two daughters are actively involved in the business, making it a true family endeavor. “NY Elite Cannabis is practically my second home now. We are a family-owned business, and that is a dream come true,” Grant shares with pride.

The dispensary’s staff consists of Bayside locals, further strengthening its ties to the community. Grant and his team are committed to putting the community first, hosting multiple events throughout the summer to engage with and support their neighbors.

A Vision Realized

Reflecting on his journey, Grant describes the feeling of realizing his vision as “unbelievable.” He often takes a moment to step back, appreciate the progress made, and keep moving forward. “Sometimes it doesn’t feel real,” he says. “When I look around, I take a deep breath and keep moving forward.”

NY Elite Cannabis is more than just a place to buy cannabis; it’s a testament to the power of resilience, community, and second chances. As it continues to grow and serve Bayside, it stands as a symbol of what’s possible when dedication and vision come together.

For those in the Bayside area or visiting Queens, NY Elite Cannabis offers not just premium products but also a story of transformation and community commitment.
