First Date with a Slavic Girl: What You Must Know for Success

Meta Description:

If you’re preparing for your first date with a Slavic gal, you should be aware that dating culture and expectations tends to be different than most Western cultures. “Netflix and chill” is unlikely to cut it. Whether you’ve met her through an international dating platform like j4l , or you’ve had the good luck of meeting her in person, read on to learn some important tips on how to make a good impression on your first date with a Slavic woman.

Pick the Place and Activity

Slavic women expect men to take the lead in relationships. As the man, you should thoughtfully pick the place and/or activity for your first date.

Not planning anything and asking “I don’t know, what would you like to do” is a sure fire way to signal that you aren’t serious or thoughtful enough to put in the effort to plan a real date. Putting effort into choosing a deliberate location and activity, like a café and a walk in a pretty park, demonstrate respect and interest.

Be on Time

Punctuality is very important in Slavic cultures. Showing up late signals disrespect and insincerity, or carelessness at best. None of those make a good impression.

Dress Your Best

Slavic culture is not nearly as casual as Western culture has become. Dressing well and being well groomed demonstrates maturity and self-respect as well as respect for her – you are trying to look nice for her, and that leaves a good impression. Coming sloppy shows you don’t care about your looks for her sake or your own – not a good first impression.

Bring a Tasteful Gift

In Slavic culture, romantic gestures like bringing a small tasteful gift is still expected. Flowers or chocolates are the usual appropriate gifts for a first date. If you want to bring flowers, just make sure you bring an ODD number and that they are red, pink or white. Avoid yellows (they signal jealousy or infidelity), and don’t give an even number of flowers because even numbers are reserved for funerals and memorials.  A simple single rose would show her your sincere interest and thoughtfulness towards her and make a great first impression.

Be a Gentleman

Chivalry is not dead in Slavic cultures. So, put on your best manners and practice good etiquette. This includes opening doors, offering your arm, helping her off or on with her coat, etc. Also, don’t be rude or loud to her or those around you. Be polite, well mannered, and self-composed.

Pay Sincere, Tasteful Compliments

Women from Slavic countries enjoy compliments when they are sincere, respectful and tasteful, similarly to how they still enjoy and expect small gifts and romantic gestures.

But make sure your compliments are genuine and specific, not over-the-top or overly focused on her physical features.

Be a Good Listener and Conversationalist

Slavic ladies tend to be highly educated and cultured. They appreciate real, deep conversations, not small talk. If you want to impress her, then you had better come with your conversation game on. Plan real questions you could ask her about her country and culture. Be ready to listen and respond with real thoughts or follow up questions, or something in your own life that it reminds you of.

Pay for the Date

Dating follows a traditional model in most Slavic countries. You should absolutely pay for the first date (and probably all the dates that follow). If you ask her to pay half or share, she will take that as an insult, either that you aren’t interested in her enough or that you’re incapable of providing even for a single date.

Be Honest and Take Initiative

As the date wraps up, let her know how you felt about your time together and about her. Be honest (and kind). If you had a good time and want to see her again, tell her so and initiate the next date (assuming she shares that desire). Don’t expect the “ball to be in her court” – it’s in yours and will continue to be if you’re dating a Slavic woman.

Don’t Rush Things

Most Slavs take relationships very seriously and do not rush into them. This is especially true where physical intimacy is concerned. Do NOT try to get too intimate too soon. To have physical or sexual expectations on the first date is considered extremely disrespectful. Taking things slowly shows respect and sincerity.
