Why Free The Trappers Is The Go-To Dispensary in Crenshaw District, Los Angeles

Free The Trappers is exactly what its name embodies: a mission to free everyone who has been unjustly incarcerated for marijuana offenses.

Located at 4050 Crenshaw Blvd., Free The Trappers sits at the iconic intersection of Crenshaw and King, directly across the street from the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall. The building itself is hard to miss, decked out in striking black stones reminiscent of a real-life trap house.

Inside, a banner reads: “We stand for social equity, fighting for fair representation and opportunity in the cannabis industry.”

The beauty of Free The Trappers lies in the fact that it was made possible by the social equity program, which aims to address the historical injustices of the War on Drugs. Out of over 2,000 applicants, only 40 or 50 locations secured licenses. Thankfully, CEO Lorenze was one of the fortunate few.

A True Rags-to-Riches Story

CEO Lorenze embodies a remarkable rags-to-riches story. An entrepreneur who transformed his past struggles into triumphs, Lorenze’s background includes being arrested and convicted for marijuana—an experience that ultimately worked in his favor, breaking down the stigma that associates cannabis users with criminal behavior.

Rooted deeply in the Crenshaw District, Free The Trappers isn’t just a dispensary; it’s a cultural landmark in Los Angeles. The exterior features a mural of Nipsey Hussle, an inspiring figure who profoundly influences the community.

Lorenze also owns another company, Grow Your Edges Back, which is sold inside the store. “It’s the only place in the city where you can get the best edge control and pre-rolls all in one spot. It’s called a party pack,” Lorenze says with a laugh.

Exclusive Interview with CEO Lorenze

SHIRLEY JU: Talk about where you're from and how you got started.

CEO LORENZE: I’m from LA, a foster kid who’s been all over LA. My mom had me back a couple of times, but when I was 13 or 14, I was lost in the system. I met my dad when I was 16 and moved back with my mom when I was 18. Things were rough—she relapsed, and I ended up homeless on Skid Row. There, I decided to sell weed as a safer drug to make some money and sustain myself. Unfortunately, I got caught, went to jail, and that began my journey in the system.

How long were you locked up for?

My first case led to about 30 days in jail, but it put me on probation. Being in survival mode, I got into more trouble. Initially, I shifted from selling weed to crack cocaine for survival, but eventually went back to selling weed. I started growing it to cut out the middleman, but got raided again. I finally decided to stop breaking the law and started rebuilding my life, which led me to this point.

You mentioned the social equity program—talk about this beautiful shop in the heart of Crenshaw.

We’re located at Crenshaw and King, a historic corner across from Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Mall. This area is central to Black Los Angeles culture. Leimert Park is just up the street. It’s a blessing and a responsibility to be here. We realize the significance of this location and aim to contribute positively to the community’s economic and cultural landscape.

Why name it Free The Trappers?

We chose the name because we believe no one should be in jail for cannabis. It’s a powerful statement, and it resonated with my partner’s vision of social justice. The name reflects our commitment to this cause.

What do people love most about the shop?

Customers often say we bring a touch of Melrose to Crenshaw. The store is beautiful, safe, and offers great deals. We have a wide selection and a fun, informative vibe. Our budtenders are knowledgeable, and we prioritize education so customers leave knowing why they chose what they did. It’s an overall great experience.

Free The Trappers stands out not just for its high-quality products and welcoming atmosphere, but for its deep commitment to social justice and community empowerment. CEO Lorenze’s journey from adversity to success is a testament to the transformative power of the social equity program, which is reshaping the cannabis industry in Los Angeles and beyond.
