On the weekend before Juneteenth in Los Angeles, the vibes were unmatched. And on that beautiful sunny Saturday, there was only one place to be: the LA Function

Serving as the biggest daytime festival in the city, this year’s LA Function also served as a celebration for Big Boy’s 30th radio anniversary. Currently on air at Real 92.3, LA’s New Home For Hip Hop, Big Boy has positioned himself to be a staple radio personality in the city of Angels, with every major artist or celebrity stopping by Big Boy’s Neighborhood at one point in their career. In fact, Big Boy has broken many artists throughout the past 3 decades… and now, we celebrate him.

Who Is Radio Icon Big Boy?

The multi-award-winning radio host, also an inductee into the National Radio Hall of Fame, has made his mark throughout many different kinds of media over the decades. Getting his big break on the 1998 Vibe TV show hosted by comedian Sinbad, Big Boy has appeared in films including Malibu’s Most Wanted, Soul Plane, The Longest Yard, and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle. He starred in the FOX series Fastlane and played a recurring role on HBO’s Entourage. You might also recognize his voice from video games such as the Grand Theft Auto series or animation like Disney Channel’s The Proud Family.

What Happened At Big Boy's 30th Anniversary Event? OOKA Fun At LA Function

Taking place at Academy Hollywood, in the heart of Hollywood, LA Function featured a dynamic lineup of DJs, with attendees hanging out both indoors and outdoors. Immediately when you walked inside, you were welcomed with the best food trucks in the city, especially clutch after you’ve had a few drinks in you.

The outdoor patio was sponsored by OOKA, the world’s first cannabis hookah. This time, it was their tea-based pods that were ready to use, giving you that same feeling you get when hitting a hookah, only healthier! There’s no nicotine. Flavors include Aurora, to calm your senses with the perfect blend of cherry, elderberry, lime and guava; as well as the Perseus, to embrace the peace and enjoy the soothing mix of lemon, black grape, elderberry, and mint.

They did a giveaway, granting one lucky winner an OOKA which retails for $399.

Celebrating Big Boy At LA Function With Joe Moses And More

When it came time for Big Boy to take the stage, he delivered a heartfelt speech reminiscing on when he first got started and nobody believed he could do it.

"They asked me one night... and that turned into 30 years," the icon shared. Near the conclusion of his speech, he included the whole community in his joy, as he emphasized that the impossible was accomplished because "they not like me" and Los Angeles is part of his success because "they not like US!"

At the end, the DJ put on Kendrick Lamar’s “Not Like Us”... and the rest was history!

The surprise performance for the evening was LA’s own Joe Moses, who performed all his bangers. The turnout was incredible, with the venue jampacked with people who were all on one mission: to have a good ass time.

LA Function has historically kicked off the summertime with its unique curation of music, art, food, and local vendors since its inception in 2018. Till next time!
